Retirement: How this impacts your benefits coverage (CUPE EWBT members)

You’ve made the big decision to retire. Congratulations!

Let’s take a look at what you need to do to wrap up your benefits coverage before you go.

Once you have determined your retirement date, your employer will provide OTIP the date your coverage ends.

Submitting health and dental claims

You will no longer have access to your OTIP secure account after the date your coverage ends.

You will have 180 days from the date your coverage ends to submit claims incurred up to and including your last day of coverage. You can contact Canada Life (formerly Great-West Life) at 1-866-800-8058 for more information.

Options to convert your group life insurance (if applicable)

If you are under 65 years of age, you may be eligible to convert your group life insurance to an individual policy without having to provide evidence of good health or undergo a medical exam, provided you do so within 31 days of your coverage ending.

To learn more about your options and to convert your group life insurance policy to an individual policy, please contact OTIP Benefits Services at 1-866-783-6847.

Other things to consider in preparation for your retirement:

  • Contact OTPP (Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan) at www.otpp.com or OMERS (Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System) at www.omers.com. A password is required to log on to your pension account. Gather necessary documents such as your birth certificate, marriage license, spouse’s birth certificate, etc.

  • Learn more about OTIP’s health, dental and travel insurance options for retirees.

  • Consider when you’ll apply for Canada Pension Plan and Old Age Security.

As your career comes to an end and a new phase of your life begins, you want to ensure that you’re prepared to make the most of the new opportunities and experiences that retirement brings.
