The early 21st  century is not an easy time to be a teacher. Attracting new, young people to the profession is an increasing challenge, both in Canada and across the world. This year on World Teachers’ Day, OTIP is saying a special thank you to those newest to the teaching community.

The 2019 theme Young Teachers: The Future of the Profession resonates strongly with OTIP. Young teachers are an integral part of the OTIP community, and we deeply respect their drive, their passion and their desire to do things differently.

Recognizing beginning teachers is something OTIP does every year through the OTIP Teaching Awards. This award, granted to a teacher in their first five years of the profession, acknowledges innovative teaching methods, exciting learning experiences and the ability for new teachers to make a difference in their students’ lives.

This year’s winner, Emily Alexandra Seiling , demonstrates all of this and more. Her approach to teaching is based on reflection and collaboration. This practice brings constant changes to her approach to student learning as well as innovation. Alex’s compassion and understanding of her students’ needs are reflected in her approach.

World Teachers’ Day

World Teachers' Day, marked every year on October 5, was proclaimed in 1994 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to recognize the important contribution of teachers to society. This year, the day provides the occasion to celebrate the teaching profession worldwide, to take stock of achievements, and to address some of the issues central for attracting and keeping the brightest minds and young talents in the profession.
