7 tips for safer RVing

Recreational vehicles (RVs) offer a unique way to explore the country by combining the thrill of travel with the comforts of home. However, before you set out on your adventures, it’s important to prioritize your safety to ensure a worry-free experience. Here are some essential tips to help you have a fun and safe journey.

  1. Perform a pre-trip check

Before you hit the road, thoroughly inspect your RV to ensure everything is in working order. Check your tires for proper inflation and tread wear, examine the brakes, and confirm that all your lights are functioning. It's also a good idea to test your RV's battery and electrical systems. Don't forget to make sure your RV's weight is within the manufacturer's specifications to prevent overloading, which can lead to accidents.

  1. Secure your belongings

Before you start driving your RV, make sure to secure any loose items inside. Unsecured objects can become dangerous projectiles if you have to stop suddenly or get into an accident. Use non-slip mats in your cabinets and drawers to help keep things in place, and ensure all doors and windows are properly latched. Additionally, store heavy items down low to maintain your RV’s center of gravity and prevent tipping.

  1. Practice fire safety

Fire safety is an essential part of RVing. Equip your RV with smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, and fire extinguishers. Regularly test your detectors to ensure they are working correctly, and replace the batteries at least once a year. Be cautious when using propane appliances, and always turn off the propane supply when your RV isn’t in use. It’s important to have a fire escape plan in place and practice it. Everyone should be familiar with the plan to act quickly and decisively in an emergency.

  1. Prepare for emergencies

RVers are more exposed to the elements compared to those staying in traditional homes. Always check the weather forecast for both your route and destination. Be ready for sudden changes in weather, especially in areas known for severe storms. If you encounter high winds, find a safe place to park and wait until conditions improve. Avoid parking in low-lying areas that could flood during heavy rain.

Keep an emergency kit stocked with supplies such as first aid items, flashlights, extra batteries, a multi-tool, and a portable radio. It’s also beneficial to learn the basic RV repair techniques and have the essential tools and spare parts on hand.

  1. Tow safely

If you plan to tow a vehicle or trailer behind your RV, make sure you have the right equipment and that it’s securely attached. Check your vehicle’s towing capacity and never exceed it. Always use safety chains and inspect them regularly for any signs of wear and tear. Ensure the towed vehicle’s lights are connected and functioning properly.

  1. Drive responsibly

Driving an RV requires different skills compared to a regular vehicle. Always be aware of your surroundings and maintain a safe following distance. Because of an RV’s size and weight, it takes longer to come to a complete stop, so avoid sudden braking. Routinely check your mirrors and be extra cautious when changing lanes. It’s also recommended to refrain from driving in severe weather conditions whenever possible. If you must drive through rain or snow, slow down and increase your following distance.

  1. Insure your RV

RV insurance is a specialized policy designed to protect owners of motorhomes, camper units, tent trailers, fifth wheels, and other recreational vehicles. It provides coverage for injuries and damage. However, the right coverage varies based on your vehicle type and specific needs. Influencing factors can include how much travelling you expect to do, how often and where you’ll use your RV, and what items you’ll bring with you. It’s recommended to consult with an experienced insurance broker to help you find the best coverage for your circumstances.
