Tips for a worry-free March Break vacation
A March Break family vacation is an excellent chance to create lasting memories, build stronger relationships, and escape the stresses of everyday life. Before you embark on your getaway, it’s essential to take precautions to keep your home and vehicle safe. Here are some helpful tips to protect your belongings and give you peace of mind so you can relax and unwind.
Arrange for someone to watch over your home
Ask a trusted family member, friend, or neighbour to visit your home every few days. They can collect your mail, inspect for damage, and check on your vehicle parked in the driveway or garage. It's important to understand that winter-related claims, such as burst pipes, could be denied if no one checked on your home while you were away. You'll still be covered if you shut off your water supply and drain the system or ensure your plumbing and heating systems are connected to a monitored alarm station that provides 24-hour service. The person you trust with your home should also know how to reach you in an emergency. Giving your neighbours a heads-up of your absence can make them more vigilant, even if it's just subconsciously.
Unplug unnecessary electronics
Disconnect all non-essential electronic devices, such as TVs, stereos, computers, etc. or plug them into a surge protector to prevent a power surge or electrical fire. Also, ensure your smoke alarms are in working order, and keep a fire extinguisher handy in case a house sitter needs to put out a fire.
Inspect your property
Take some time to tidy up, water your plants, and lock up anything in your yard, such as bicycles, tools, and barbeques. It’s helpful to trim trees and shrubs to keep your house in plain sight. Consider taking photos or videos of your belongings before you leave; this is an easy way to document everything in case you need to make an insurance claim.
Make your home appear occupied
Noticeable changes in how your home typically looks can signal to others that you’re away. Consider using smart plugs or timers to turn lights on and off automatically. Leave your curtains and blinds in their usual position while keeping valuables out of sight.
Remember to lock up
Before leaving, lock all your windows and doors (and activate your security system, if you have one). Don't forget to secure other openings, such as pet doors and mail slots. If you have an automatic garage door, consider disconnecting the electronic opener and placing a padlock on the garage door track for added security.
Notify your insurer before installing a roof rack
While a roof rack is a great way to bring your family’s skis or extra luggage during road trips, it’s classified as a vehicle modification and can affect your auto insurance coverage. Failing to inform your insurer about such changes could lead to a denied claim or even a cancelled policy if something happens. Speak to your insurance broker before making this modification to determine how it may impact your coverage and ensure you have the proper protection.
Not using your vehicle? Secure your documents
If you’re not driving your vehicle, remove your registration and proof of insurance and store them in a safe place in your home. Make sure to keep your keys out of sight as well. Remember to return these documents to your vehicle when you use it again.
Keep your vacation plans private
While it may be tempting to announce your upcoming trip or share exciting updates as you travel, keep in mind that revealing too much information online via social media or email can alert potential thieves that you won't be home. It's safer to post your travel photos only after you return.
